Transcending Traditions

Maricica (Marii) Bledea represents the youngest of three generations of women in her family to grow up in Breb, Romania. Breb, located in the Maramures region, is one of the few remaining European villages where people still farm and live in ways long gone from the rest of the continent.

Marii, like many in her generation, finds herself torn between staying in the village and upholding the traditional lifestyle, or leaving the village to pursue her dream of becoming a lawyer.  Knowing that Breb probably doesn’t hold work for a lawyer, she is aware that her life may end up being quite different from and perhaps far away from the family relationships she cherishes.
