Jonathan Butler, graduate student and a Concerned Student 1950 organizer, sat down Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015, with Columbia Missourian photographer Katie Hogsett to discuss rising frustration surrounding race on campus. Concerned Student 1950 and supporters began a week long camp out on Mel Carnahan Quadrangle Nov. 5, in support of Butler and his hunger strike in an attempt to oust UM System President Tim Wolfe out of office. Protestors have been holding demonstrations for the past month in support of increased diversity and inclusion of minorities at MU. Butler was three days into his hunger strike at the time of the interview, and a number of things have changed since. Both Wolfe and Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin resigned their positions Monday, Nov. 9, and Butler ended his hunger strike. The Board of Curators named former MU deputy chancellor Mike Middleton as interim UM System President on Thursday, Nov. 12. The Board also transitioned Chancellor duties immediately to interim Chancellor Hank Foley. Gov. Jay Nixon named Yvonne Sparks, an executive at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, to serve as a voting member on the Board of Curators on Friday Nov. 13. There are still some demands of Concerned Student 1950 that have not yet been met, including shared governance on the Board of Curators, the creation of a diversity curriculum, increase in the percentage of black faculty and a plan for retention rates for marginalized students.
